Two free dark-sky spots if you're stuck in the city
If you're in a city hotel and an aurora alert fires at midnight, Telegrafbukta and Prestvannet on Tromsøya Island both beat the hotel doorstep by a real margin. Telegrafbukta is a 20-minute walk from downtown with open water views facing east, south, and west; Prestvannet sits higher on the island and the lake surface reflects an active aurora well for photography. Neither replaces a fjord lodge, but both are free and reachable on foot.
