Khamlia: a Gnawa music village with its own story, not a Berber stop
Merzouga's desert camps run on Amazigh (Berber) hospitality, but Khamlia is a different community entirely, and the two shouldn't get folded together. The village sits a short drive south of Merzouga, home to families descended from Sub-Saharan communities and long recognized for its Gnawa music tradition.
Gnawa music runs on a trance rhythm built around three instruments: the guembri, a three-stringed bass lute; the krakeb, a pair of hand-held metal castanets; and a hand drum. The tradition grew out of the spiritual and healing practices that Sub-Saharan communities carried into Morocco, and it's recognized today as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Every summer, Khamlia hosts the Sadaka, a festival where musicians play close to non-stop for three days and nights[3], drawing performers from well beyond the village.
Booking a Khamlia visit

Rissani, the old market town a short drive from Merzouga, runs its souk three mornings a week, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday[5]. Traders set up under the same covered lanes each time, selling produce, spices, household goods, and dates grown across the Tafilalet oasis, and the market thins out fast once the sun climbs, so a lunchtime arrival mostly finds packed-up stalls rather than a working souk.
The three market days aren't interchangeable in feel, so it's worth picking one deliberately if a souk visit matters to your plans, rather than assuming any morning will do.
