Match your dates to the Kp forecast, not just the calendar
The Icelandic Met Office publishes a 3-day aurora and cloud-cover forecast; check it before you lock in which night you'll drive or step outside, rather than assuming any night in the September-April window will deliver. The weeks around the spring and autumn equinoxes carry a statistical edge in geomagnetic activity, but a clear sky on a low-Kp night beats a cloudy sky on a high-Kp one every time.
