The route: what you're driving
Route 23 (CH-23) connects Calama to San Pedro de Atacama in a near-straight line across the Atacama plateau. The road is paved throughout, well-maintained, and almost entirely flat. The Atacama salt flat stretches to the south while the volcanic cordillera rises to the east. At 100.5 km it's a short drive by Chilean standards: around 1 hour 10 minutes at normal road speeds.[1]
Calama sits at roughly 2,260 m above sea level. San Pedro is at 2,443 m. That 180 m difference barely registers on the drive, but if you're flying in from sea level, both towns count as altitude. The road offers the first real preview of the landscape: bleached hardpan, dust-whipped mountains, and occasional mining trucks heading to the Chuquicamata copper mine north of Calama. It's not scenic in the conventional sense, but it's unambiguously the Atacama.
Most arrivals from Santiago land at Calama between 08:00 and 14:00, with LATAM and SKY Airline operating roughly 10 flights per day. Transfers synchronised to flight arrivals are the norm; shuttle operators check the arrivals board before sending vehicles.
Private transfer: right for groups and heavy kit
A private taxi or remise (pre-booked private car) runs the same 100.5 km route on your schedule. The driver meets you at arrivals and leaves when you're ready. No waiting for other passengers, no intermediate stops.
Private transfers cost roughly 3–5x the shared shuttle rate per vehicle, depending on the operator, vehicle size, and whether you book direct or through a San Pedro agency. For two people the price gap narrows; for three or four it's competitive with four shared-shuttle tickets. Families with young children, travellers with photography tripods and telescope cases, or anyone carrying fragile gear should take the private option.
Some private operators offer flexible wait time if your flight is delayed; confirm this before booking, since shuttle operators generally won't hold a full van for one late passenger. On the return leg, private transfers can pick you up at an awkward 04:30 for an El Tatio-day-of-departure itinerary that the shared shuttle can't serve.
Book in advance, especially during June–August when the Atacama fills with astronomers and astrophotographers. Several San Pedro lodges, including Explora Atacama and Tierra Atacama, include round-trip transfers from Calama airport in their rates; confirm at booking before arranging separately.
Rental car: only if you plan to self-drive excursions
Rental car agencies, including Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and a few local operators, have desks at Aeropuerto El Loa. Picking up a car here makes sense if you intend to drive yourself to the major excursion sites: the Atacama salt flats and flamingo lagoons south of San Pedro, the Valle de la Luna, or the altiplanic lagoons circuit on Route 27 toward the Bolivian border.
A few things to weigh. International driving permit: you need one, or a valid licence from a country whose licences Chile recognises. Check with the rental agency before you travel. Road conditions: most named excursion sites involve unpaved sections, and El Tatio and the altiplanic routes sit above 4,000 m. A standard sedan is usually adequate for El Tatio on a clear day; a 4x4 gives more margin in winter or on the rougher routes. Cost vs. guided tours: daily rental rates at a small regional airport are not cheap. Compare the daily rate against what guided tours would cost, since tours include transport and a guide who knows where the geysers are before dawn at 4,300 m.
If you're spending a week in the Atacama and want genuine freedom on the road toward Bolivia, a rental car earns its cost. If your trip is four nights and you're booking guided tours for most excursions, it's probably superfluous.
Bus: technically possible, not practical for most
Public buses from Calama to San Pedro de Atacama exist but are not a straightforward airport transfer option. The bus terminal is in Calama city, roughly 7 km from the airport. Reaching it requires a taxi from arrivals (add 15–20 minutes and an extra fare), then waiting for a scheduled departure.
Bus operators including Tur Bus and smaller regional carriers serve the Calama–San Pedro route with a few departures daily. Journey time is similar to a shared shuttle: around 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 minutes, plus the added step of crossing Calama first.

For budget travellers spending several weeks in Chile without a fixed schedule, the bus makes sense. For most visitors arriving on a set itinerary with booked accommodation and limited days, the extra complexity against the modest cost saving is hard to justify. The shared shuttle solves the airport-to-door problem more cleanly.
Booking and practical details
For shared shuttles and private transfers, booking in advance is better than hoping for availability at the airport. San Pedro-based operators coordinate transfers around flight schedules; providing your flight number and estimated arrival time lets them plan accordingly. Walk-up bookings are possible but unreliable during peak months.
A few specifics worth noting before you travel:
- Lodge-included transfers: Several of San Pedro's lodges include airport transfer in their rates. Nayara Alto Atacama and Hotel Cumbres San Pedro de Atacama typically include pickup. Ask when booking.
- Flight delays: Calama occasionally sees wind-driven dust events that delay arrivals. Shared shuttle operators generally wait for delayed flights; confirm this policy at booking.
- Altitude from the moment you land: Calama is already at roughly 2,260 m. If you're flying in from Santiago (500 m) or Lima (sea level), the effects of altitude may start at the airport. Drink water on the flight and take the first hour slowly.
- Return transfer timing: For early-morning flights out of Calama (common when connecting to international routes via Santiago), a 05:30 departure from San Pedro is typical for a 08:00 flight. Shared shuttles at this hour need pre-booking; private transfers are more reliable for pre-dawn departures.
