Where to Go Stargazing in July
July carries zero aurora picks on this site, and that is not an oversight. Above the Arctic Circle the sun barely dips below the horizon this month, so there is no real darkness for the aurora to show up against, whatever the Kp index says. If you are tracking when the northern lights come back into range, aurora season reopens as true darkness returns to the far north from September.
The core belongs to the south this month
July is peak galactic core season below the equator, and the destinations proving it share one thing: the longest true-dark windows on the whole calendar. Aoraki Mackenzie in New Zealand's Mackenzie Basin logs 11.4 hours of astronomical darkness this month, the most of any pick tracked here, inside an International Dark Sky Reserve with the core climbing high overhead. Uluru and Namibia's NamibRand Nature Reserve both sit at 10.6 hours, and the Atacama Desert in Chile follows close behind at 10.5 hours, where thin, dry air at altitude keeps the core sharp instead of smeared by humidity. All four score a 3 out of 3 for July conditions, the top mark on this site's scale.
July also falls deep in the dry season for three of those four spots. The Atacama Desert sees some of the lowest annual cloud cover on Earth this time of year, part of why major observatories sit there. NamibRand and the outback around Uluru run similarly dry through the southern winter, so a clear-night forecast is more trustworthy than at most destinations on this site. Aoraki Mackenzie is the outlier, a temperate climate rather than a desert, so keep a spare night free in case of cloud.
The new moon falls near the middle of July. That is the week worth booking around if your dates are flexible: no moonlight to wash out the faint dust lanes threading through the core, and the Milky Way's brightest stretch sitting almost straight up after dark in all four locations above. The four or five nights either side of the new moon stay usably dark too, before the waxing moon starts intruding about a week later. Check a moon phase calendar for the exact date in your travel year.
Staying in the Northern Hemisphere is still an option. Tenerife and La Palma in the Canary Islands hold a solid score of 3 too, but only manage around 7 hours of real darkness against the south's 10-plus, because northern summer nights are short everywhere this time of year. Fine if a long-haul flight south is not realistic, a clear step down if it is.
The one meteor event on July's calendar is the Southern Delta Aquariids, peaking around July 28 with a modest ZHR of 20, roughly one meteor every three minutes in a genuinely dark sky. Timing matters: some years that peak lands close to a full moon, which will wash out everything but the brightest streaks, so check the moon phase for your travel year. If catching meteors matters more to you than a clean Milky Way photo, watch the nights just after the new moon instead and treat the shower itself as a bonus, not the main event.
