Why Tenerife's sky stays clear when the coast sits in clouds

The single most important word in Tenerife stargazing is inversion. Moist north-easterly trade winds strike the island's northern slope, rise, cool, and condense into a persistent cloud layer between roughly 800 and 1,600 metres. Above that band, the air is dry, stable, and largely free of the particulate haze that degrades seeing at sea level. This is the trade-wind temperature inversion, and it is the physical reason the Canary Islands host two professional observatories.
Teide National Park sits above the cloud line, with the Izaña Observatory perched at 2,371 metres. The climate numbers bear out the advantage: roughly 3,500 sunshine hours per year and a total annual precipitation of just 393 mm[1], most of which falls as winter snow that sublimates quickly rather than as rain. In June the observatory records a relative humidity of 32%, dropping to 25% in July and 30% in August, the three driest months of the year.

The Sky Protection Office (Oficina Técnica para la Protección de la Calidad del Cielo, or OTPC) enforces the Ley del Cielo (Sky Law), established in 1988, with implementing regulations following in 1992, which controls outdoor lighting across the island and restricts flight paths near the observatory.[2] The law is not decorative: Tenerife's municipalities are required to replace streetlights with low-pressure sodium fixtures and install shields that direct light downward. The result is that the sky above 2,000 metres on Tenerife is among the most legally protected on Earth.
In practical terms, what this means for you: if you drive up through the cloud layer from Puerto de la Cruz or La Laguna on a summer afternoon, you emerge from a grey blanket at about 1,400 metres into sharp, bone-dry sunlight. The same dividing line holds at night; the coast sits under clouds, and the caldera sits under stars.

When the Milky Way core is visible from Tenerife

Tenerife sits at roughly 28° North latitude, which puts the galactic centre (in the constellation Sagittarius) at a maximum altitude of 30 to 35 degrees above the southern horizon during summer.[3] That is lower than what you get in the Southern Hemisphere (where the core goes nearly overhead), but it is comfortably above the horizon haze and enough to photograph the full arch with a wide lens.
The core season on Tenerife runs from February through October. Outside that window, the galactic centre is either below the horizon or rises only at dawn; you can still see plenty of stars on a winter night, and Orion and Taurus are spectacular from the summit, but the dense, structured band of the Milky Way that defines most astrophotography from the Canaries is absent.

June and July are the peak months. The core rises in the south-east shortly after astronomical twilight ends and stays well above the southern horizon for most of the night. By August the core is still excellent but begins its descent by the early hours. September is very good: the core is visibly lower but still clear, and the earlier sunset means you do not need to stay up past midnight to catch it. October is the tail: the core hugs the western horizon by late evening and fades into the atmospheric murk not long after.

A few notes before the table. The clear-sky percentages are estimates based on the Izaña Observatory's long-term sunshine-hour records and precipitation patterns; they describe the likelihood of a substantially clear night at altitude, not the absence of every wisp of cloud. Even a "99%" month can produce a single cloudy night. The temperature range is for the caldera floor (roughly 2,000–2,300 m) after midnight; the summit ridge near the cable-car station is colder by several degrees. Crowd levels reflect the combination of general Tenerife tourism and the number of organised stargazing tours operating each month.

Winter on Teide: snow, closures, and the transparency paradox

Winter on Teide divides the useful from the impossible. From December through March, the mountain enters a colder, wetter regime. The Teide Observatory suspends its public daytime visits entirely during these four months, and night access to the observatory has never been open to the public at any time of year.[4] The summit cable car operates on a reduced schedule in winter (09:00–17:00 versus the summer 09:00–18:40), and the TF-21 and TF-24 access roads can close without warning when snow accumulates.[5]
Snow at 2,000 metres on a subtropical island surprises first-time visitors, but it is a regular occurrence. The lowest temperature ever recorded at Izaña is well below freezing, measured in February. On a clear winter night at the caldera rim, even when the daytime temperature at the coast reads 22°C, you will need a down jacket, insulated boots, and gloves. The wind at altitude, funneled through the caldera, makes the effective temperature considerably lower.
And yet: a clear winter night on Teide offers exceptional transparency. Cold air holds less water vapour, and the calima — the Saharan dust haze that occasionally blankets the Canaries in summer — is far less common in winter. If you are willing to accept the cold and the risk of a road closure, January and February deliver skies that, when clear, rival the transparency of the Atacama. The trade-off is that you lose the Milky Way core entirely. What you gain instead is Orion high overhead, the Pleiades sharp enough to count individual stars, and the kind of seeing conditions that make planetary observation through a small telescope genuinely memorable.
If you plan a winter session, check the Teide National Park website for road status before you leave, book your permit through the Getting to Teide from Tenerife Airport guide (free, but limited to 200 per day and often gone days in advance), and accept that you are gambling on a ~50% clear-night probability. When the gamble pays off, the reward is a sky so still and dark that the winter Milky Way — the faint outer band, not the core — is visible to the naked eye.

Aligning your trip with the lunar cycle

A lunar synodic cycle lasts approximately 29.5 days — new moon to new moon. For trip planning, the practical dark window is roughly five nights before and five nights after new moon, giving you about ten nights per month when the sky is genuinely dark for deep-sky observing. Outside that window, a waxing crescent still leaves the second half of the night dark; a waning crescent gives you the first half. But the best work happens within three nights either side of new moon.

  • New moon means a fully dark sky, ideal for both naked-eye observing and astrophotography.
  • Waxing or waning crescent means part of the night is dark; plan your session for the moonless half.
  • First or last quarter means roughly half the night is dark; you can still work, but plan around moonrise or moonset.
  • Full moon means the sky is bright enough to read by. Useful for lunar photography or a guided session focused on planets, but do not expect to photograph the Milky Way.

What to pack, where to stay, and how to plan around access

Even in July, when the coast swelters at 28°C, the Teide caldera after midnight sits at 10 to 15°C and feels colder under steady wind. A down jacket is non-negotiable year-round. Layer with:
  • A windproof outer layer
  • Insulated boots (trainers lose heat through the sole on cold volcanic rock within twenty minutes)
  • Gloves
  • A beanie

Accommodation at altitude is limited to the Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide, a state-run hotel inside the national park at roughly 2,150 metres. It is the only bed within the caldera. Access logistics to get right before you arrive:

  • Summit access permit: required for the final ascent beyond the cable-car upper station (Montaña Blanca / Pico del Teide trail). Free, limited to 200 per day, issued by the national park authority. Book online at least a week ahead in summer.
  • Cable car: runs 09:00–18:40 in summer, 09:00–17:00 in winter. Last descent is an hour before closing. If you intend to stargaze from the upper station and walk down, confirm the descent route and timing with park staff; the trail is not lit.
  • Road access: the TF-21 and TF-24 are generally well-maintained but can close in winter for snow. Check the Cabildo de Tenerife road-status page before driving up.
  • Fuel: the nearest petrol station to the caldera is in Vilaflor or La Orotava. Fill the tank before you ascend.
Photographers should target June and July for the longest core window, but September offers a practical advantage: the core sets earlier in the evening, which means you can shoot shortly after astronomical twilight and still get to bed at a reasonable hour.
