Where to stargaze: the mountain versus the coast

The best stargazing spots in Tenerife are all inside Teide National Park, above the trade-wind inversion layer at roughly 1,600 metres. Below that line, clouds and light pollution from coastal resorts degrade the sky significantly. The four main sites:

Coast versus mountain is not a close contest. Coastal areas like Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos sit at Bortle 5-6 on the dark-sky scale. You can see bright stars and planets, but the Milky Way is invisible and the sky is washed out by resort lighting. The northern coast is worse: it sits under the trade-wind cloud layer roughly half the time.
