How to plan your first astrotourism trip

Astrotourism went mainstream fast. Interest surged again after the 2024 total solar eclipse over North America, which pulled millions of casual travelers into their first deliberately planned sky-watching trip[5]. The planning logic doesn't change much, though, whether you're chasing a once-in-a-lifetime eclipse or an ordinary Tuesday night under the Milky Way.
Work through these in order, not all at once:
  • Pick the phenomenon first. A meteor shower's peak date, an aurora season tied to the solar cycle, an eclipse path, or simply "the darkest sky I can reach" drives the destination and the date, not the other way round.
  • Check the Bortle scale.
