The statistic counts any auroral detection: a pale green band low on the horizon, a faint wash that the camera picks up as vivid but your naked eye registers as gray, a 20-minute appearance before cloud cover closes in. Those all count as sightings. They are not the same thing as the display that made you buy a plane ticket.
