Where to Go Stargazing in January
January is one of the two or three best months of the year to chase the aurora in the high Arctic, and the numbers back it up: Tromso, Abisko, Finnish Lapland, Iceland, Fairbanks and Yellowknife are all sitting at 12 to nearly 13 hours of darkness a night. That's the real driver here, not luck. More dark hours mean more chances for the Kp index to spike while you're actually outside and looking up, instead of asleep or still at dinner.
Of that group, Tromso and Abisko edge out the rest on darkness alone, both past 12.5 hours nightly. Fairbanks and Yellowknife trail by only a few minutes and make up the difference with drier air and, in Yellowknife's case, some of the most consistently clear inland skies in the northern hemisphere. The Milky Way's quieter winter face
January isn't galactic-core season. The bright center of the Milky Way doesn't clear the horizon at a useful hour until spring. What January does offer is something different: bone-dry desert air and some of the longest nights of the year at low-latitude dark-sky sites. Death Valley and Big Bend are both logging close to 11 hours of darkness, Merzouga isn't far behind at 10.8, and AlUla rounds out the group at 10.7. That's enough time to watch Orion climb high, pick out the winter Milky Way arm running through Auriga and Gemini, and catch the zodiacal light if you're patient after the moon sets.
The new moon falls in mid-to-late January; check the sky facts panel above for the exact date each year. That week is the single best window to plan a deep-sky trip to any of those four sites. Book around the new moon rather than around your calendar's convenience if you can help it. A few nights either side of full moon will wash out anything fainter than the brightest stars overhead.
January also carries the Quadrantids, which peaked on January 3 this year at a strong ZHR of 110. It's a sharp, short peak, a few hours rather than a few nights, so if you missed it, don't chase it into the following weeks. Wait for the next shower instead and plan around the moon in the meantime.
Be honest with yourself if you're planning from Australia, New Zealand or southern Africa: January is deep summer south of the equator, and it shows in the numbers. Aoraki Mackenzie is only getting 4.4 hours of darkness this month, a short, late-rising window rather than the multi-hour session you'd get in June or July. If you're set on the Southern Cross and the Magellanic Clouds, this isn't the month. Nearly everything worth booking in January skews firmly northern.
